The Smoking Problem

The Assignment

The following information and assignments are to be read and prepared prior to the class.

Cigarette smoking makes people sick. Smoke-related illnesses include

ü     Lung cancer (肺癌)

ü     Other cancers

ü     Stroke (中风)

ü     Heart disease

ü     Emphysema (肺气肿)

ü     Ulcers (疡)

ü     Infertility (不孕) (women and men)

ü     Other diseases.

 Most people in China personally know or knew someone with a smoke-related illness. You probably know someone with a smoke-related illness.

 I.      Write a short paper describing the following about your relationship to that person.

1.     What illness does/did that person have?

2.     Is/was the person a family member, a friend, or someone else? How long have you known this person? Are/were you close to this person?

3.     If the person is/was a smoker, what are/were the smoking habits of that person? If the person is/was a non-smoker, where does/did the person go that has/had smoke? (That might be at work, at bars, at home, with friends.)

4.     In your opinion, did smoke help make them sick?

5.     Do you think someone is responsible for the illness? Should someone pay for their medical care? (That could be a person, the cigarette company, the government, or someone else.)

 II.          (NOTE: please pay attention to the word “after”!) After you write this paper, read the interview with Wu Fengping. (It is also posted on the wall in your classroom.) Be prepared to discuss whether the information would have changed what you wrote. (Please do not rewrite your paper!)

 III.            Bring your paper and your thoughts to class.
